Codex usage limits

What the official sources say about usage windows, credits, resets and API limits, and what they cannot tell you about your own account.

How do you use Codex?

Usage mode

This choice only filters the rules below. It does not read your account, and a plan name does not imply a fixed number of messages.

Showing the rules for both a ChatGPT plan and an API key.

Windows, credits, resets and API limits

Rule baseline 2026-09-27.1. Each rule names its sources and the day they were read; a rule past its review date is marked and its conclusions are downgraded until a new review.

Included usage windows

Unknown for your account: no reading in this tab yet.

  • Codex usage on a ChatGPT plan is not a fixed number of messages. The model, the size and complexity of a task, and whether it runs locally or in the cloud change how much of the allowance a task uses.

  • Local tasks and cloud tasks share your plan's allowance. A five-hour limit and a weekly limit can both apply, and limits differ by plan.

  • The official client reports each limit window separately, with its own used percentage and reset time, and a window can be missing. Room in one window does not mean room in another.

  • To see your remaining limits, open the official usage dashboard or run /status in an active Codex CLI session.

Credits

Unknown for your account: no credit balance has been read.

  • After you reach your included limits, available credits let you continue working. Included usage and credits are separate resources.

  • Which plans can use credits, and how credits are shared, follows OpenAI's credits help article for your plan. A credit balance is known only when your own reading reports one.

Resets and reset credits

Unknown for your account: reset credits have not been read.

  • Each reported window carries its own reset time. Windows reset on their own schedules; the reset time of one window says nothing about another.

Codex App Server: account rate limits · read 2026-09-26 · review due 2026-10-26

  • Reaching a limit does not always stop a task that is already running: OpenAI's help says an active turn can continue past the limit, subject to fair use.

  • Reset credits are a separate entitlement with their own eligibility rules, and the official client reports how many are available. A public reset announcement does not show that your account received one.

API rate limits and budgets

Unknown for your account: no API budget has been read.

  • When you use Codex with an API key, API pricing applies instead of the usage limits included with a ChatGPT plan.

  • An HTTP 429 from the API has several causes: requests sent too quickly (follow Retry-After when present), a request rate that rose too quickly, or an organization or project that reached its spend limit. Each needs a different fix; none of them waits for a weekly reset.
